This year, Syosset High School introduced its first ever Sculpture Club. It was founded because students enjoyed the sculpture unit in art class last year and wanted a space where other students could be artistically expressive and creative, especially if they couldn’t fit that time into their regular school day. The club president, Maddie Altman, described the club as a “fun and stress-free environment.” Sculpture Club uses all recycled materials and plans to use recycled clay for future projects. The officers create an environment where all students are welcome, whether or not they consider themselves good artists or have plans to pursue art in the future. In the Sculpture Club, members can work independently or in groups, and they can choose long or short projects depending on their preferences. Club credit is given for completing either one big project or two to three smaller projects. Multiple projects are planned throughout the year, so members have many opportunities to create pieces. The club is flexible with all work completed at school and no work required at home. Additionally, if a member is not interested in one project, they can always return when a project they want to join begins. It also provides ways to get involved in the community, as the club plans to feature their pieces around Syosset. The Sculpture Club is a welcoming and creative space for students who enjoy art, want to be part of a friendly environment, and want to contribute to the community at large.
