Students have come together through Syosset High School’s Unified Basketball program for the past four seasons. Head coach Mr. Greg Cardona and assistant coach Mrs. Victoria Buscareno have created a program that is more than just a team. Through teamwork and school spirit, it has become a community centered around inclusion and connection.

Unified Sports is a program created through the Special Olympics to promote social inclusion. It brings together students with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. Through shared practices and competition, the program works to break down stereotypes, build friendships, and create an inclusive school environment. At Syosset, that mission comes to life every time the team steps onto the court. “When you come to watch a Unified Basketball game, you truly see the magic that happens on the court. The games are competitive, exciting, and filled with memorable moments,” said Coach Buscareno.

While the team competes hard during every matchup, Coach Buscareno explained that the focus extends far beyond the scoreboard. Each game provides athletes with opportunities to shine, whether through a strong defensive play, an impressive assist, or the unforgettable moment of scoring their first basket. She said, “Every game, one of our athletes has a special moment to celebrate. Those moments are met with roaring applause from teammates, coaches, and fans alike. The support from the Syosset community has played a major role in creating such a positive environment throughout the season. “The cheers and support from the crowd leave everyone feeling encouraged and celebrated,” said Coach Buscareno.

One group that has been especially involved is the Business Honor Society, which partnered with the team to help promote games and raise awareness about Unified Sports. Coach Buscareno said, “They have been outstanding and instrumental in raising awareness about both our team and Unified Sports as a whole.” The program has also expanded through social media. Students, families, and friends are constantly updated with game highlights and memorable moments. The team’s Instagram page has helped showcase not only the team’s accomplishments on the court, but also the strong connections formed through the program.

Unified Basketball continues to grow at Syosset High School. The program is a powerful reminder that sports can bring people together and help create a stronger community.
